Pregnancy and Dental Care – Frequently Asked Questions

When I was pregnant with our first child, I have to admit my nerves often got the best of me. I worked hard to take precautions so as not to harm the baby, and no doubt I looked like the stereotypical fretful mom-to-be. Yet I never missed a doctor’s appointment, but I did have some concerns about going to the dentist – for health reasons, of course. Taking the time to research the facts about dental health and pregnancy, however, helped eased my mind about a number of issues. If you are expecting and wondering about what you should do when your dental appointment rolls around, here are some commonly asked questions to ponder.

1) How does being pregnant affect dental health?

When you are pregnant, you’ll find it makes a huge impact on your body. Personally, I noticed that thanks to the hormonal changes I experienced I had reactions to certain types of food and soap. I had to stop using one brand of lotion, for example, because the scent suddenly made me nauseous. With regards to teeth, you might find that your gums become more tender, or that plaque buildup is more prevalent. It’s important to brush regardless, but when you are pregnant you want to take extra care to brush regularly and floss.

2) Can a pregnant woman keep a dentist appointment?

Yes. There is no reason why you can visit your doctor for a routine cleaning. However, it is important that your dentist and hygienists are aware of your condition. You should not have X-rays taken during this time, but if an emergency should arise you will consult with your dentist.

3) Is there a certain brand of toothpaste a pregnant woman should use?

You may be able to use your current brand if you don’t develop a nauseous reaction to it. If you wish to err on the side of caution, you can speak with your obstetrician or dentist about a suitable toothpaste to use in the interim that will get the job done without causing you discomfort. Your local health store will have a number of all-natural pastes made with baking soda, but be careful that they don’t make you feel woozy!

Enjoy your pregnancy. These nine months will result in changes to your body that may frustrate you, but the end result can be wonderful. Stay on your dental care during this time, too, because you’ll soon have reason to smile.

Affordable Dental Care – How To Save Big Bucks On Your Next Visit To The Dentist

Going to the dentist?

We all dread those visits to the dentist, the needles, the sound of the instruments, the effect of the anesthesia after we leave their office…and last…but not least…. the hefty bill!

Dental procedures in the US have become extremely expensive, almost prohibitive…causing people to avoid important and necessary visits to maintain healthy teeth. How can families afford to keep their teeth healthy? Just a visit for a cleaning can break your bank!

Fortunatley for us, someone out there had the insight to create “Discount Dental Plans”, where for a low monthly fee, your entire family can save 60% to 80% on all dental work, including braces. These plans are extremely flexible with no deductibles or pre-existing conditions clauses; no waiting periods, you can start enjoying the savings immediately after you enroll. But…how does this work? Why would any dentist accept a discounted fee for his or her services when he or she could get the full retail amount? *How does the dentis benefits from these plans? The benefit to the dentists is that they get paid right away, at the time of service. No paperwork to fill out and submit to the insurance, no 90 to 120 day wait to get reimbursed a discounted fee anyway.

*How do YOU benefit from these plans? Savings, Savings, Savings. You can literally cut your dental bills in half.

These plans are growing in popularity tremendously, with millions of new members enrolling every day. Some of these plans are so versatile, they even include discount benefits for vision, prescription and chiropractic services.

So….grab your plan today and take care of those precious teeth!

Caring For Your Baby's Umbilical Cord After the Birth

Caring For Your Baby’s Umbilical Cord After the Birth

After you have given birth, whether it is vaginally or via c-section your baby will still have a small section of their cord attached to them. This will be clamped and should fall off within a few days. The majority of baby’s do not experience any problems with their cord following the birth, however many mums and dads do worry about whether their little ones cord has become infected.

You may notice that the remaining piece of cord smells slightly. This is nothing to worry about, a cord that has become infected will have a noticeable smell as soon as you walk in to the same room as your baby. You may also notice that the base of the cord is slightly green in colour, again this is nothing to worry about as it is just the natural colour of your baby’s umbilical cord.

Take care of your baby’s cord by wetting some cotton wool, squeeze the water out of it and lightly wipe the area where the cord is attached in one direction only. Dab this area dry afterwards with some muslin or a similar fabric. Avoid using cotton wool to dry as bits of it may become stuck around the wet cord area.

When changing your baby’s nappy fold down the top so that it is not rubbing against the cord.

Ensure your baby’s cord gets as much ‘air time’ each day as possible. This will allow the cord to dry and encourage it to fall off. Do not try to pull the cord off yourself, your midwife or health visitor may try this, but they will be better equipped to judge whether it is able to come off with encouragement than you are.

When your baby’s umbilical cord has finally come off, continue to air it and clean the area each day until it looks completely clear.

The award-winning and patented FuzziBunz reusable pocket-style diapering system ensures that babies stay dry, healthy and happy. Made with only the finest and most innovative materials, FuzziBunz diapers deter icky leaks, prevent painful diaper rash and keep baby looking and feeling good. When choosing the right cloth diaper for your baby, there is a lot to think about. One major choice today is choosing a One Size diaper or a Sized diaper. Use the chart below to help decide whether a One Size or Sized diaper is right for you and your baby. If a trim fitting diaper is important to you, then the Sized diapers may be best suited for you – most babies use only 2 sizes of diapers, Small and Medium. If a diaper that will last from birth to potty, and will stand up to three years of use or more is what you value (and you are willing to sacrifice some trimness for this), then the One Size may be your diaper of choice. The FuzziBunz One Size Diapers are the most adjustable and innovative one-size cloth diapers on the market today! Adjust the diapers to fit babies 7-35 pounds and get a snug fit every time with the button-adjusted waist and leg casings. The leg casings adjust to 8+ settings and the waist adjusts to 4+ settings. Never before has a pocket-style cloth diaper been SO adjustable! Includes – FuzziBunz One Size diaper with hip snaps (1 each) – Absorbent cotton 4 layer inserts (2 each Small, 2 each Medium/Large) – Replacement Elastic – Bonus (2 each) Features – Sturdy Snap

The Importance of Health, Mind and Body Today

When you walk into a book store or login to an online book shop, you are sure to spot the ‘Health, Body and Mind’ section listed prominently among others like Fiction and Classics. For quite some time now, this category has been blooming and has attracted a lot of readers from various walks of life. A lot of them have made it to respectable Best – Seller lists around the world and we have seen a handful of them being made into successful movies, even, the latest being the Hollywood movie ‘Eat Pray and Love’ starring Julia Roberts. So what is it that makes the health, Mind and Body books so appealing to readers?

The first reason is the sheer ability of a well written Health, Mind and Body book to connect the reader’s mind with his body and his heart, and in a very effective way offer alternative solutions to one’s day to day problems. Another reason is that these books provide us with unconventional and fresh methods of being at peace with ourselves, attaining spirituality and consciousness to help keep our mind, body and soul in perfect harmony. Needless to say, we are all caught up in various troubles of the modern world, day to day stress regarding our work, relationships and even health. We are all busy multitasking, balancing various acts at one time and hence, there is little or no time left for our own self, for introspection and for an honest self searching. Over the time, we learn to or get accustomed to ignore any such need because it isn’t really an issue in the beginning, right? So we keep doing it – and bury these emotions deep within us and carry on without confronting the issues. These books help us bring those emotions out.

A good Health Mind and Body book teaches you the way to live a truly healthy and worthwhile life by showing you how to reach for and touch, polish and rejuvenate your inner soul. They teach us the importance of emotions, as the source of a person’s state of mind that in turn influences his body into a state of wellbeing or ill-health. Emotions have a significant bearing on a person’s mental and physical state. This being so, spiritual books offer a unique way to heal oneself from within, and therefore be able to handle ones feelings in order to enjoy a better state of peace and joy.

Besides emotional intelligence and Spiritual Guidance, these books also focus on physical well being. There are a lot of book in the market that guide readers through pregnancy, illness and even weight loss. A number of famous health books are available for all those who have weight issues to deal with. No wonder this genre is attracting more and more readers with each new book. Let’s hope this genre keeps exploring more and more avenues and keep giving readers all the boost they want for a better living.

New Seniors Are Still Talking About Health Care

New Seniors Are Still Talking About Health Care

Over the recent holiday season, I attended many parties and had a number of dinners with friends. Although I turned 65 several years ago, this was the first time I was aware that the conversations with my peers had moved on to a new list of topics.

Just ten years ago, at the turn of the millennium, we talked about our jobs first and retirement plans to a lesser degree. Mentions about the accomplishments of our adult children and grandkids were also sprinkled throughout the conversation.

Now, once the obligatory review of the nation’s financial condition is completed, the subject quickly turns to health issues. This applies to most of those 65+ whether they are working or retired. Other once popular subjects take a back seat to this all-important issue.

Individual health situations, quality of health care and health insurance (both coverage and cost) gain greater concern as New Seniors continue along life’s path. Until the health care reform bill became a political football, many of those 65+ took the subject for granted. We came to expect the notion that Medicare would take care of 80% of the costs and a supplemental plan would cover the rest.

The new legislation included a $ 500 billion cut in Medicare spending supposedly to reduce waste, fraud and abuse. In addition, medical equipment reimbursement and payments to participating doctors and hospitals were due to be cut. The prescription drug plan is to be revamped, too. However, some insurance providers raised premiums for this coverage 20% at the beginning of last year and another 20% for 2011.

While cut backs and changes are working their way through Washington, the fact that health care is still up in the air is unsettling to New Seniors. Some politicians tell us not to worry and others warn the 65+ citizens that trouble looms ahead. What matters is this state of flux can contribute to stress, which in turn can be manifested in a wide range of physical conditions. Maybe that’s why so many New Seniors I talk to are not feeling good about how their health care situation is being kicked around the halls of Congress.

If we raise the banner of “platinum power” as we did in the recent elections, where New Seniors cast one out of every three votes, the politicians must listen. They are already working on fund-raising efforts for the 2012 elections. So the preliminary campaigning is not far off. This is the ideal time to contact your representatives and let them know how vital health care is to your wellbeing, your peace of mind as well as your physical health. They must not take any part of our coverage away. This is a promise the government must keep, because we are not in a position to more money to pay for rising rates.

Maybe, if we get New Senior health care under control, we won’t worry about our health and that will have a positive effect on how we feel. So the next time I’m talking to a group of New Seniors, we can talk about positive things such as our grandchildren.

Don Potter is a Philadelphia native and 50 year veteran of the advertising agency business. Now living in Los Angeles, he has written two novels in retirement and frquently writes and speaks on marketing issues. Potter is the founder and editor-in-chief of NewSeniors.com, the first online magazine dedicated to those 65+.

NewSeniors.com articles provide thoughts, comments and opinions designed to spark thinking, foster discussion and stimulate debate. The editorial content features general news and information as well as videos of interest to the burgeoning 65+ audience. A touch of nostalgia is also included. Our Life and Optimal Health: It’s About What We Choose!

Ever wonder how some folks seem to just “flow” through life? How is it that their days seem balanced, relationships solid, energy good, health fantastic? Have they been sprinkled with magic dust or what???

Yet, if you speak with these folks, you will find that just as much “life stuff” has happened to them. So what’s the difference?

Optimal Health is about more than just weight loss, or exercising more, or looking good in your clothes. Optimal Health is about taking your unique life and making it all that it can be….on all levels. It is difficult to feel optimally healthy if you aren’t sleeping well, if your stress levels are playing havoc on your relationships or eating patterns, if you are so out of touch with who YOU are and what you want, or if your life feels controlled by outside forces.

Taking an honest assessment of your current total health status takes guts. Self-awareness takes courage. For some, it might be easy to look at physical health, but scary to look honestly at emotional wellbeing. For others, a journey into the realm of physical health can bring up uncomfortable realities of how they deal with job or relationship stress, and the challenge of how to change that reality.

But what is the alternative to looking honestly at ourselves? A life lived without satisfaction? Choices based on denying ourselves a life that is in integrity with what we know we want?

Our ability to create a life of “flow” and health begins with a look at our current reality. While there are certainly things beyond our control, there are many things on which we can have impact.

Start by what you want, with a look at where you are now.

An assessment I like to use with my clients is http://www.drwayneandersen.com/quiz/draa1.php. Acknowledge that choice, and attitude, are under your control. Know that support is available in many places; often you just have to ask!

A Few Family Dental Care Tips

A Few Family Dental Care Tips

Personal hygiene is certainly crucial to any individual and any family, and when it comes to personal hygiene and your teeth are going to be very important. Taking care of your teeth will help you to achieve optimum dental health leading to pink gums, whiter teeth, and fresh breath. Consider these family dental care tips to help you maintain your pearly whites.

Make sure that you brush your teeth at least twice every single day. This is something that you need to install into your daily hygiene routine. Ideally you should be looking to brush your teeth every single morning when you get up and every single evening just before you go to bed. Brushing your teeth after every meal is also a good idea if you can do so.

It is very important that the toothbrush that you select is appropriate for proper dental care. Generally you will find that dentists recommend that you use a toothbrush that has soft bristles so that you don’t cause any damage to your gums when you are brushing. You should also choose a toothbrush that will have a tongue cleaner on it so that you can maximise its cleaning properties.

At the same time you need to make sure that the toothpaste that you select is appropriate for you and your family as well. There are lots of different types of toothpaste that you could choose, many of which will have a specific function such as whitening, fresh breath, and oral protection. If you can, try to select a toothpaste that will incorporate all of these different factors.

It is also a good idea to include mouthwash into your dental routine as well. Mouthwash is very helpful in fighting cavities and will help to prevent periodontal disease. At the same time gargling mouthwash on a daily basis, particularly after every brush, will help you to maintain fresh breath as well.

You should also look to floss your teeth as well. Flossing is extremely helpful in cleaning the areas between your teeth that you will toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Using floss will, therefore, help you to remove any debris that has not been removed from brushing. These food particles can cause decay and therefore need to be removed.

Of course, you will also need to focus on modifying your lifestyle so that you incorporate foods into your diet. Even though you may have a decent brushing routine it can still be difficult to maintain proper dental health if you are eating all of the wrong foods. As such, foods and drinks that are full of sugar and caffeine should be cut down as much as you can.

Of course, it is also very important that you regularly visit and attend your local dentist. While proper dental health is going to start at home, it is absolutely critical that you see a professional every six months or so for a checkup. Various different oral problems could develop over this time regardless of how proficient your oral routine is.

The Page Boy – Cute and Cunning

The witnessing of a wedding ceremony is not exclusive to adults. On the contrary, the participation of little children as part of the wedding entourage is equally important. The wedding guests anticipate the marching of these adorable angels as they signal the commencement of the ceremony. Clad in matching gowns and shoes, often with flowers in their hands, these flower girls are fun to watch as they throw flowers on the carpet and along the aisles. Not to be outshined are the handsome page boys that are dressed almost to perfection by their proud parents. Do not be deceived by the angelic looks of these flower girls and page boys because, given an opportunity, they are bound to cause some minor chaos during the wedding. It is most likely that you have seen a child throw a tantrum or just freeze exactly when the wedding is about to start. Page boys might even pull a trick or two on a clueless flower girl!

Page boys are called as such to indicate their role in a wedding, which is to serve or attend to the needs of the bride or the groom. In British royal weddings, the presence of page boys is a must and they play a significant part. A page boy may also be utilized during a cotillion (a formal presentation of young ladies, debutantes, to polite society) but this is done mostly for effect. In a wedding, the part of a page boy has been created to accommodate the young male relative of either the bride or the groom. He may be a younger brother, cousin or nephew. It is quite normal in any wedding to find that the entourage consists mostly of family members of the couple to be wed. In some cases, young male children of friends may be requested to be the page boy if there is no suitable relative. The page boy is the male counterpart of the flower girl.

Generally, boys aged 5 years old up to 10 years old may take the part of page boys. A child younger than that may cause a disruption during the wedding march or the ceremony itself, while someone older might look to awkward and no longer cute to look at. The ring bearer is considered a special page boy since he is the one tasked to carry the rings that will symbolize the union of the bride and groom. It should be noted that the term “ring bearer” has been adopted instead of page boy since it is more descriptive of what the young boy holds with his hands. He is still considered a page boy but with a special participation. This is also proper in order to distinguish the ring bearer from the other page boys who may be present in the wedding. During old times, the bride is expected to wear a bridal dress that has a long train. Since the added length could result to a heavier dress, the bride is burdened with dragging her train. Page boys should be there to assist her by carrying such train. Nowadays, we seldom see a bride having a long train, thus, the special page boy, who is the ring bearer, is the only one we see in a wedding.

Weddings are certainly not complete without a page boy in tow.

Budget Dental Care

Your smile is probably one of the first things most people will notice about you. A person can tell a lot about your personality by a simple smile, it conveys a lot of emotion. There’s the shy smile, the friendly smile, the nervous smile, and once a person gets to know you the humoring you smile. The biggest part of your smile that people will notice is your teeth. Unfortunately most people are embarrassed by their teeth. It’s not that they don’t take care of them, a lot of people just don’t have access to proper dental care and it shows.

Dental care is more than just brushing, flossing and rinsing every day. That is a large part of it but being able to see a certified dentist twice a year can make a huge difference in how you mouth looks and feels. As with everything else, though, seeing a dentist is an expense most people can’t afford. Even if your employer has insurance if you work minimum wage you almost can’t afford to lose the premium money out of your weekly pay check.

There are some things you can do to ensure that you are getting the best dental care you can even if you don’t have top of the line insurance. First thing is of course to brush a minimum of twice a day. For the best smile and healthiest teeth and gums you should brush after every meal. Brushing doesn’t mean that you swipe at your teeth for thirty seconds and call it good either. You should brush for a minimum of two minutes. Be sure to get along the gums, as well as the backs of your teeth too. Two minutes might seem like a long time but if you take the care to brush along the gums, on the crowns and the backs of your teeth during that time you will get rid of a lot of food particles that can cause cavities.

Flossing is a must as well for good dental care. You can actually get cavities between the teeth because food can get trapped there. By flossing you’ll be removing the food particles that are stuck and not allowing them to rot your teeth.

The third thing is using mouthwash. It doesn’t just make your breath smell good and leave a nice minty aftertaste in your mouth. The best mouthwashes will also kill any germs on your gums and help to force out any remaining food particles you may have missed during the flossing stage.

You can have great dental care even if you can’t see a dentist regularly. Even if you don’t have insurance you should still try to make a bi-yearly trip. Speak to your dentist office to see if there are payment arrangements that can be made or discounts that they will be willing to help you with since it will all be out of pocket.

Bronchiolitis Symptoms – Does Your Baby Have Bronchiolitis?

The symptoms of Bronchiolitis can be very similar to the common cold, which makes diagnosing the condition tricky, however babies with Bronchiolitis typically exhibit four main symptoms, the most significant of which is the cough.

Symptom One: Fast Breathing

Sufferers begin taking shallow, quick breaths that don’t inhale much air.

Symptom Two: Loss of Appetite

Babies with Bronchiolitis usually lose interest in food and stop feeding.

Symptom Three: Rasping Cough

Bronchiolitis produces a distinctive sounding rasping cough that sounds different than that kind of cough you get with the common cold.

Symptom Four: Rising Temperature

A high temperature and fever typically accompanies cold-like symptoms and a runny nose.

If your baby has any of these four symptoms, fast breathing, loss of appetite, a distinctive rasping cough and a higher than normal temperature, then they may have Bronchiolitis and you should seek medical attention immediately.

About The Symptoms Of Bronchiolitis

The early symptoms of Bronchiolitis develop in a very similar manner to the common cold. The first symptom is commonly a blocked or runny nose, which is sometimes accompanied by a cough or slightly elevated temperature. Normal temperature ranges are around 36-36.8°C or 96.8-98.2°F.

These symptoms tend to get slightly worse during the first three days, then gradually start to improve. Most cases of Bronchiolitis are not serious, but these relatively mild earlier symptoms can become more intense, so it is critical to regularly monitor your child and look out for any significant changes to their symptoms.

What’s The Difference Between Bronchitis And Bronchiolitis?

Bronchiolitis should not be confused with the similar sounding lung condition Bronchitis.

Bronchitis is a condition that affects both adults and children and it occurs when an infection causes the bronchi (the larger of the air passages in the lungs) to become irritated and inflamed. This causes more mucus production than usual, which your body then gets rid of through coughing.

Bronchiolitis is a potentially more dangerous inflammation of the bronchioles (the smaller air passages in the lungs), which leads to breathing difficulties and typically affects babies and young children.

When Should I Seek Medical Advice?

Should the symptoms develop into a more serious case of Bronchiolitis, babies usually exhibit four specific symptoms, the most significant of which is the distinctive rasping cough.

In a very small number of severe cases, your baby’s tongue and lips may turn ‘blue’ in colour. If this starts to occur, take your baby to A&E or call for an ambulance immediately.

Thankfully in the majority of cases, the symptoms of Bronchiolitis are not severe. However in some cases vulnerable babies, who were born prematurely or suffer from underlying heart or lung conditions can be more likely to develop severe Bronchiolitis.

The more severe symptoms last for two to three days, then gradually ease up and are gone within one to two weeks. In many cases the condition can be treated without having to go to hospital, but severe cases can require hospitalisation.

If your baby exhibits all of these symptoms, then seek medical attention from a healthcare professional immediately.

Aug 25th 2012, 16:45

A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway Win a $50 eGift card from Sephora A circus cat entertaining patrons in front of the Sephora store on Champs Elysées in Paris

I can’t believe it took him five years to tell me!

Five years I’ve been making his gravy, arranging his travel, rubbing his tum, and now, only NOW do I find out that Tabs worked for Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas before we met?

Apparently, it’s something only the cats and humans in his “inner circle” know about… What am I, chopped liver?

I only found out this morning as I was finalizing the details of his Vegas trip at the end of October and saw a note on his calendar that read, “gst apprnce at Cirque” [guest appearance at Cirque] and asked him about it.

“What’s this thing about Cirque?”

“Mrrrow…”

“What?! You performed with Cirque du Soleil? Why haven’t you mentioned it before?”

“Meow…”

“What does that even mean, ‘need to know basis’? I’m your assistant, Tabs. I need to know about things that pertain to your career. That is, if you want me to do a good job.”

On the October trip, he’ll be giving a private Cirque show for his fans before hosting a fancy party for VIPS/celebs/famous cats at the MGM Grand.

Beyond making the travel arrangements, I’m also supposed to coordinate the security detail, which is gonna be a b*tch. Seriously, if you thought Prince Harry was a party animal, you’ve never partied with Tabs.

You know, sometimes this job is a bear. Pet assisting for a world-renowned plus-size kitty supermodel sure is tough, but you know what’s easy? Entering to win today’s $50 Sephora eCard giveaway. :)

What folks are saying…

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. :) I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.” -Angel

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!” -Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)
