Jackson and Tabs

This morning I awoke to a blood curdling scream!

I bolted straight up in bed when I heard it. “What the hell was that?!”

“I don’t know!” El Hub said, already getting up. “Stay here. Call 911 if I don’t come right back.”

El Hub grabbed a machete he keeps by the bed (yes, a machete) and hurried downstairs.

“What’s going on?!” I shouted after him.

No answer.

“Sweetie? What’s going on?”

I’d thrown off the covers and was sitting up on my knees with my phone in my hands. Then I heard other noises coming from downstairs, quieter sounds, like people laughing?

“It’s okay,” he called back, sounding relieved as he started back up the stairs. “False alarm.”

He stood in the doorway to the bedroom smiling at me. “But it looks like Tabs finally figured out how to turn on the TV.”

I guess he couldn’t wait to start watching the Cats From Hell marathon I set the Tivo to record, so he decided to start watching it now.

Or, slightly more likely, he accidentally stepped on the remote control and pressed the power button…

The screaming was from a sphinx cat its owners were trying to bathe. :)

Tabs just loves watching My Cat From Hell, mostly because of the host, Jackson Galaxy.

He says that Jackson has always been very professional and kind each time they’ve worked together.

Good to know.

Well, I’m gonna go watch the next episode now while I try to calm down… You should enter this weekend’s giveaway if you haven’t already. You could win a $50 eGift card from Sephora.

What folks are saying…

“Hi Karen. Oh my goodness! I can’t believe I won! :O Thank you so much! You, Tabs, and your blog are amazing! Thank you for keeping me updated on all things beauty and more importantly, for keeping me entertained! Keep doing your thing! Thank you again.” -Jacqueline

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. :) I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.” -Angel

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!” -Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)

History of Italian Weddings

History of Italian Weddings

It is always interesting to study the history of weddings of different cultures. One can find that some of the old traditions have been carried forward to the current weddings.

In Italy, to this day marriages are not performed during Lent and Advent in May or August. Sunday was declared the best day for the marriage and June was (and is) considered the ideal month to marry. This is based on the Roman goddess Junio, representing safety of home, marriage, and childbirth.

In some families the marriages were arranged by the families of the bride and groom. A male relative of the groom would visit with the father of the intended bride and ask for her hand in marriage. Sometimes a matchmaker was used to carry a message to the intended bride’s family. Once an agreement between the families was reached, the couple was declared engaged. The prospective bride was expected to immediately start gathering clothing (even for her future husband), furniture, and other items for the home. This became known as the bride’s ‘trousseau’. If the engagement ring contained gold it was not to be worn until she received the gold wedding band as it was seen as bad luck to wear gold without being married.

In olden times a great deal of the Italian wedding traditions consisted of warding off evil spirits. The groom would be sure to have something iron on his person to ward off the evil eye. The wedding veil was for the purpose of warding off evil spirits they may try to attack the bride and tearing the veil after the ceremony was considered good luck. The bride was not to have a complete bridal gown until the wedding day. It was to remain incomplete until she walked down the church aisle. Presumably a final stitch was made somewhere on the dress at the entrance of the church. The groom would wait at the front of the church and present the bride with a bouquet of flowers and herbs, to ward off the evil spirits.

At other times the groom would pick the bride up and walk her to the church. In this case a log and a saw would be placed in their path and they had to saw it into two pieces to show their union. If the bride walked to the church, without the groom, the local people often put things in her path such as a broom, beggar, crying baby. How she handled these items showed if she would be a good wife, mother, would be kind, etc.

In the ceremony the groom stood to the right of the bride, thus freeing his sword hand, just in case someone tried to steal his bride. Ten witnesses were required to make the ceremony official; hence the need for a large bridal party. They were dressed like the bride and groom to confuse the jealous spirits. The bride carried (and still does in most weddings) a silk or satin purse for guests to deposit their money gifts in as a way to help with the expenses. Another way money was raised was by the best man cutting the groom’s tie into pieces and selling them to guests at the wedding.

Following the ceremony the bride and groom were pelted with almonds (in mesh bags), three for children and five to seven to promote fertility. In ancient times a loaf of bread was broken over the bride’s head to represent fertility. At the end of the wedding the bride and groom broke a vase or glass into pieces with the number of shards representing how many years they would be married. Mothers-in-law sat at a table and kept a record of the repayment of favors or money which needed to be witnessed (this is still done in some of today’s ceremonies)

Most of the ceremonies started with mass in the early morning, followed by music and dancing throughout the night. Food was, and is, a large part of the wedding. Thirteen or more courses were ordinarily served (a large meal is still served at today’s weddings); this represented the union of the couple and their families.

It’s amazing how many wedding traditions still remain even though they may have evolved somewhat to reflect today’s society. Incorporating traditions based on heritage is often a good way to honor the old while celebrating the new.

For Super Health, Try Superfoods

You may have heard about a new way to eat your way to good health. It’s not a fad diet, either; what has happened is that all of these seemingly perfect diets that are out there actually have a few things in common. Some doctors refer to these commonalities as “superfoods” because they are mentioned and promoted in all of the diets that are out there. Not just that, though–these are the food that are actually low in bad fats, and high in good nutrients like vitamins and minerals. These superfoods are supposed to help combat early aging and keep you generally healthy.

According to most doctors and health professionals who have studied this phenomenon, there are basically fourteen superfoods. Not surprisingly, they are all naturally occurring, and also fairly easy to get in the produce section or local health food store. Adding any of these superfoods to the daily diet is a great way to ensure that your body is treated to beneficial antioxidants, those things that help rid your cells of excess waste and keep you feeling and looking young and vibrant, as well as keeping many diseases at bay.

Some of these superfoods are things like beans, or legumes, as well as berries and broccoli. Most people are aware of the health benefits of these foods, because they contain significant amounts of the recommended daily dose of vitamins. Eating fresh vegetables that are high in water content, like the other superfoods oranges and tomatoes, help flush the system more quickly and also deposit high doses on Vitamin C, which is essential to good health.

Beyond those superfoods, others include pumpkin, nuts, like walnuts that are high in “good” fats, and spinach. For those of you who are fond of teas, green tea has long been known to act as a health booster, and it has a prominent place on the superfoods list. Now, you may be thinking that all of these additions to your diet will turn you into a complete vegan, but do not despair! Salmon, turkey, and yogurt all make the list, too. Salmon, for the obvious reason of the high content of Omega-3 fatty acids, is a logical choice. White meat from turkey is also quite healthy when consumed in moderation, and without the addition of preservatives and salt. Speaking of additives, yogurt is best consumed in its plain state, not the kind with loads of sugar and concentrated “fruits”.

Round out this diet with some whole grains and oats, and you will be well on your way to good nutrition, wellbeing, and disease prevention. Superfoods are no secret–these are the foods that almost always appear on the recommended lists of all of the diets out there. This is with good reason–superfoods are the foods that will work for any body, all of the time. So make out your grocery list and get on your way to super health with your new diet of superfoods!

mac yung rapunxel

I can’t rap to save my life, but you already knew this, right? :)

Oh, what I wouldn’t give to be able to spit bars on the fly…

Because if I had to battle someone on a street corner, I’d be so screwed!

A rap attack

But hey, I guess if I’m ever overwhelmed with the urge to drop some beats, I could just wear the new MAC Lipstick in Yung Rapunxel ($15) instead.

This creamy deep plum is the product of MAC’s new collaboration with rising New York rapper/singer/lyricist Azealia Banks.

Azealia Banks, 1991

The name, Yung Rapunxel, is also her alter ego.

I’d never heard of her before the lipstick, but I gotta say — I’m diggin’ her style. It kinda has a ’90s house music vibe to it…if Lil’ Kim lived in the house. Or something like that.

As for the lipstick, I like. It’s definitely dramatic, and I think the semi-matte finish goes well with it.

I get the sense that Yung is one of those colors that would look really fab on gals with very light or very dark skin tones.

lorac pro mascara review

Karen's Inner Drag Queen: Time to do it to it, Miss Thang. Get up! I am not about to spend all day and night watching Animal Planet on the couch.

Karen: Okay, but —

Karen's Inner Drag Queen: Wash your face! Brush your teeth! Remove that hideous scrunchie from your hair! And swipe some makeup on before I start going through glitter withdrawals!

Karen: Dude, seriously — chill! You really need to be nice to me right now because I feel like a drum exploded in my head!

Karen's Inner Drag Queen: I’m sorry, baby girl, but you know what they say — sometimes you gotta be cruel to be kind. :)

And since I’m founder and CEO of our fabulousness, I’m taking the reins. I am not about to let this migraine bring us down. You and I are way too sexy for this crap!

Karen: Okay, okay… I know better than to get in your way.

You’re the boss. What do you want me to do first? Please bear in mind that whatever we do I intend to continue wearing these sweats. That’s non-negotiable.

Karen's Inner Drag Queen: Wha?!

Karen: Look into my eyes…

Karen's Inner Drag Queen: Alright, fair enough.

Let’s start with the basics then. Fill in those caterpillar brows first, and then please do something about that whole thing goin’ on over there…

Karen: Where? Over here? Under my eyes?

Karen's Inner Drag Queen: Mmm-hmm.

Karen: All done. Next?

Karen's Inner Drag Queen: Good. Now give those lashes some love.

Here, use my new LORAC Pro Mascara ($23)…

Karen: Ooh! Cool tube. And it’s huge!

What a cute brush, too. It’s shaped like a tear, aww. And the tip is so pointy! I bet it really grabs lashes in the inner and outer corners.

Karen's Inner Drag Queen: Oh, yeah. It’s good for black, glossy lashes, way long and thick, and you’re gonna love how easy it is to build up in layers. I’m talkin’ drama! It kinda reminds me of YSL’s Faux Cils like that.

The only thing, though, and you’ll notice this I’m sure, is that you have to dilute the wand first — like, you know, swipe it on something to get rid of the excess; otherwise, it gets hella clumpy!

Karen: Okay, but is it flaky (like you know who)? And what about smears?

Karen's Inner Drag Queen: Naw, at least not for me. And the separation and curl hold are pretty fab.

Karen: Alright. Let’s do three layers…

Qtica Solid Gold Anti-Bacterial Oil Gel and Overnight Intense Foot Repair Balm: Fashion Week, Beauty Strength
Sep 7th 2012, 16:00

Now that NYFW has descended upon us, there's hardly a spare second to sleep more than a few hours and eat a well-rounded meal, let alone deal with my fingernails and aching feet. Of course, I'm already off to a running start with a gel manicure and pedicure. But it's only a matter of days before my nails lose their gloss and my dogs start to bark, hardcore. That's where Qtica enters the picture. I'll be keeping a tube of their Solid Gold Anti-Bacterial Oil Gel ($11.99) in each of my bags (no time for switching out!). Not only does it purify your fingertips, it makes cuticles disappear at once and brings the shine back to your manicure. Best of all, it's un-greasy and not at all oily. Then before I fall into bed, I'll remember to rub their Overnight Intense Foot Repair Balm ($11) all over my abused heels. With a honey and vitamin base, it does a genius job of healing the most distressed of feet and provides a natural protective coating, so they're less likely to get irritated. Which will be helpful in the morning when it's back into those McQueen heels!

mac face and body foundation

While there are many things I’ll miss about the world after the coming zombie apocalypse — hot showers, modern dentistry and Frosted Strawberry Pop Tarts among them — few losses will be missed as much as MAC Face and Body Foundation, one of my much-loved creature comforts.

I can’t imagine life in the badlands without it…

This sheer-to-medium coverage liquid foundation is just one of those fantastic MAC performers ($33 for the 4-ounce bottle above), and it’s the only foundation I’ve been wanting to wear these days.

Yesterday morning while walking Tabs outside on his leash, we saw that the leaves have started to turn yellow and fall from the trees. There’s also a new chill in the air early in the mornings.

Yup, it’s fall. Or darn near. And now that it is, I feel like it’s time for a more dressed up face look — something less dewy and casual than my spring and summer routine with NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer.

The Beauty of Life: First Look Fridays: Manicurist Rica Romain

The Beauty of Life
thumbnail First Look Fridays: Manicurist Rica Romain
Sep 7th 2012, 14:51

Teen Vogue. Harper's Bazaar. Vanity Fair. W. V. It's a who's who of fashion magazines ... and manicurist Rica Romain's work has appeared in all of them. The mother of two has a truly inspiring story about how she came to work in this business, not to mention great nail tips and a wide range of product loves! Keep reading to find out more.

How did you first become interested in beauty, and what led you to become a manicurist?
I am originally from Portsmouth, Virginia. I have two wonderful children: Heaven, 9, and Zion, 7. My story is so different -- most don't believe me when i tell them how I started to become a manicurist. I started to work for Verizon DSL and due to the death of my first son, I decided to take leave off of work.

During my life i was never the girly type, but I always seemed to have some type of obsession with always having to have my nails done when I touched people. I have always believed in the power of energy through touch, so I felt as though having your nails done when greeting a person would brighten their day (or yours). So during the time of my mourning, I found myself in the nail salon more than usual, but my nail tech seemed to not really care about the importance of my nail care. I decided I could do a better job on my own, so I knew I needed formal training. I went to Miracle Beauty and Nails Academy. After graduation, I went back to working at Verizon and doing my own nails, not wanting to ever make a career of it. As life does surely change, so did my goals.

When it came time to renew my license, I was growing more and more bored with my life and wondered why I never did anything in the two years with my nail license. So I quit a $60,000 dollar job a year to work in a nail spa. Single mother, no clients, no goals, no expectations. What the hell was I thinking! It was a struggle at first but with hard work and a soft smile I worked all the way up to being the nail department manager, which led to getting my Instructors license, and becoming the Director of Education for my spa.

Teaching for the salon, I had to stay up on the latest and greatest by attending trade shows. At one trade show I was able to meet the great Deborah Lippmann and later became her assistant. She taught me how to do nails on set and begin my portfolio and how to find an agent. I had to make another huge decision, to either stay in Virginia at the another great job or move to the city and see if i could make it as a editorial manicurist -- I'm glad I moved. It was much harder to adjust this time, but here i am today!

Are there any nail trends right now that you're especially excited about? What makes them stand out for you?
1) I love the pointed and stiletto nails. I always wore a round nail and often was told it was out of date or grandma-ish, so I'm glad they are back.

2) I am still a freak for short vamp nails. They can make any pair of hands million dollar worthy.

3) I love that color in general is back. I prefer that the nails are short to normal length because the length is what can make a neon pink classy not trashy!

4) I'm also into the nail wraps by Sally Hansen or Incoco, or Minx. I love the prints and that they are so easy to remove.

What are your favorite nail products?
I was told I'm a product whore because I don't believe in using one complete line to get the best look. But I do believe in supporting a line that is based on strictly nail products. These are the products I love.

Tropical Shine nail files

Mehaz implements

INM Out the Door Fast Drying Top Coat

Zoya nail polish

CND hand treatments

What are your top 3 nail tips?
1) Educate yourself by all means available. Trade shows or tutorials, fellow manicurists, DVDs, nail publications ... you get my point. This is a business that is always changing and there is something you can always learn.

2) Keep your nails done. You are your best form of advertising. No one is above making a new client.

3) Practice. There are so many avenues in the field of nails -- be the best at whatever road you take. If you can't do enhancements well, practice giving the best manicure until you have perfected other things because life is full of surprises and you might make yourself famous by that manicure!

Being a manicurist must be fun, but what do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time I'm actually a poet. I write constantly. Also I make homemade aromatherapy candles!
