Rozy asks…What is Advanced Polymer technology? Dermadoctor’s Ain’t Misbehavin’ says “Advanced polymer technology that soaks up excess surface oils yet won't leave skin parched.”

The Right Brain responds:

Based on the ingredient list (see below) the Advanced Polymer technology appears to be Microsponge (™) particles by Amcol Health and Beauty. (The chemical name is Methyl Methacrylate/Glycol Dimethacrylate Crosspolymer for those of you keeping score at home.) This technology consists of polymer beads that are can be loaded with oil soluble active ingredients like Retin-A. Supposedly it allows you to add hard-to-stabilize active ingredients into formulations.

Microsponges suck

However, in this case instead of delivering an active ingredient, it appears that Dermadoctor is using the polymer beads to absorb facial oil. Does it really work? Well, it’s documented that the polymer technology is capable of absorbing oil soluble actives. However there’s no way to tell if these polymer beads can absorb enough facial oil that you could tell the difference.
