How The Different Hair Removal Methods Work

Unwanted hair is a major problem for human beings. Keeping them on the body is just an embarrassment. Both men and women use different hair removal methods for getting rid of the unwanted hairs.

All the methods have their own benefits and side effects.

The cheapest method is shaving. Also it is very convenient, fast and easy. But as it involves removing the hairs from the surface of the skin with a sharp edged blade, it may also be quite dangerous if it is not done properly.

Cuts, nicks and razor burns are common side effects of shaving. Also there is a risk of swelling, razor bumps, redness and ingrown hairs. Excepting the face of a female, shaving with a wet razor for unwanted hair removal can be performed for any body area. The results of the shaving last only for a day.

A Depilatory (hair removing) cream or lotion for removing the unwanted hair is also an inexpensive and convenient method. The process is fast and easy. It involves applying harsh chemicals for dissolving the hairs above the skin’s surface; it may also be quite dangerous if not done properly.

The main problem with a depilatory is that the harsh chemicals used in it can also burn the skin. It often causes redness on the skin. Other demerits are that it is very messy and it stinks. Excepting the pubic area, a depilatory can be used on any body part because it may cause serious skin irritation there. The results last for up to three weeks.

Waxing is the next hair removal method, which can expensive and also inexpensive depending where it is performed at home or at a salon. The results of waxing are great. They last longer than any other temporary method, for up to six weeks. But, at the same time, waxing is very painful as it works by pulling the hairs off along with the wax from the skin. To lessen the pain, a topical numbing spray or gel can be applied an hour before.

Apart from the pain, the common side effects of waxing are redness and ingrown hairs. An important thing to keep in mind is that it should be done several days ahead of any special event. Waxing can be used on almost any part of the body.

Enough of the temporary methods now talk about the permanent methods.

Electrolysis is the one of the two permanent hair removing methods. Electrolysis is quite expensive and time consuming. It involves inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle individually below the skin surface and shocking them with a current or chemical or both. Electrolysis is the most painful method of all methods. So, a topical anesthetic must be used before using the electrolysis. It involves regular weekly or monthly sessions which can go on for a year before the treatment is complete.

Swelling, pinpoint and scarring is the common side effects of electrolysis. Electrolysis can be used for any body area for removing unwanted hairs. Electrolysis results last indefinitely, unless there is a new cell growth within the follicle area.

Laser technology is the most advanced and very expensive method. It works with a hot laser light focused on damaging the hair follicles. Laser technology is also very painful but, it is not as painful as electrolysis. Still a topical anesthetic should be used. The best thing about laser treatment is that it is very fast. A large amount of hairs can be removed from the body.

The common side effects of Laser Treatment are redness and swelling. Laser can be used for any area of the body for removing the unwanted hairs. The results are permanent after taking several regular sessions of laser treatment.
