Are your late nights causing acne on your forehead?

Copyright © www.vivawoman.net Some of you may recall that I used to write a fair bit about acne here. Since resolving my acne issues, I don’t write much on that topic anymore but I realized that there are many who come to this blog looking for such information. In fact, I’m most amused that a [...]

“Almost done! Be down in five minutes!”

I wonder if boys are born knowing that that phrase up their actually means that they’re gonna be waiting at least another 30 minutes, or it’s knowledge they acquire over the years.

Poor El Hub… Sometimes I think I can actually hear his eyes rolling when I yell to him from upstairs, “Almost done! Be down in five minutes!”

It’s all the little bits, ya know? Those are the things that can really add up to take so much time — the things like shading, contouring, highlighting and texturizing we do to give our makeup extra bamf!

You know how it goes… Like J. Renner told Ellen, you start with the basics. “Brows, lashes, lips — frame the face!” (at about 3:34 in the video). But then somewhere along the way, the makeup train derails. Next thing you know, you’re holding five brushes in one hand and two palettes in the other, and the sink is covered in fallout.

Possessed! That’s how you look, but you feel like the queen of the world! :)

If those little beauty bits — the things like sculpting, defining and adding texture to your skin — light your fire like they light mine, don’t miss the new MAC Face and Body collection, a 27-piece release.

It includes 13 travel-sized bottles of MAC Face and Body Foundation (1.7 ounces for $27 each, versus $35 for the regular 4-ounce bottles), six Pro Scultping Creams ($20 each), six shimmery Pressed Pigments ($21 each) and two brushes ($25 for the MAC 215, and $35 for the MAC 163).

Here’s a quick look at four pieces from the collection and a few first impressions…

I loved the wavy hair from Rebecca Minkoff's Spring 2013 runway show. Luckily it is easy to recreate at home! Start by applying Finishing Spray and Body Foaming Mousse throughout the hair and power dry with fingers for texture. Smooth out ends with a Mason Pearson brush. Take random sections of hair and using a 1" barrel curling iron, create curls through the mid-lengths, making sure to

VPL: PHYTOA’s Bob Recine created this four-handed fishtail braid using PHYTO Professional Workable Holding Hairspray. It was then topped off with a black head strap…a little creepy no!?

3.1 Phillip Lim: NARS’ Francelle Daly said he was going for 'sophisticated rocker chick' with this look and with the dewy cheeks and long lashes I’d say he did a great job. I’m loving the matte lip as well. He used Biscayne Park Satin Lip Pencil (new for Spring 2013) and Light Reflecting Setting Powder – Pressed (also new for Spring 2013).

Marc Jacobs:  How stunning are those brows? Francois Nars, who always leads the beauty team at Marc Jacobs himself, created this look and he used Bali or Bengali Eyeshadow to achieve those beautiful thick brows. When asked about the look Nars said "she's a typical Marc girl. Very New York City, very chic, very interesting." Sheer Glow Foundation and new for Spring 2013 Radiant Creamy Concealer were used to give the models their porcelain complexion.

Zac Posen: I love the soft wave John Frieda’s global creative consultant Luigi Murenu created at Zac Posen. It was the perfect complement to the designer’s elaborate gowns. To get the look keep the crown frizz-free by applying a dime-sized amount of Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Original Formula, smoothing hair downward from the top of the head to below the ear. Next apply Frizz-Ease Curl Reviver Styling Mousse evenly through hair and brush to uniformly distribute product. Create a severe middle part and blow dry completely, brushing hair back and away from the face to make the hair at the crown flat and smooth. With a 1" curling iron, create a wave by wrapping small sections of hair twice around the barrel. Make sure to stop before reaching the nape of the neck in order to keep the crown flat. Brush hair out to create one uniform wave. Follow with Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray to keep style in place.

Beauty Snob: LovelySkin Product Spotlight

LovelySkin Product Spotlight

For the second year in a row now I stopped by a pop-up LovelySkin hosted in Manhattan to showcase some of their best products. It was a great opportunity to not only learn about new beauty buys, but to speak with the people behind them to get a better feel for them and who they’re best suited for.

LovelySkin is HUGE. Just to give you an idea they’re the 500-something most visited site in all of the internet and in terms of Facebook “likes,” in the beauty category, they are second only to Sephora. Their list of brands are impressive – Clarisonic, Dr. Brandt, iS Clinical, Avene, Klorane…they’re like Sephora in terms of depth of product selection, but they focus on advanced skincare and brands that, for the most part, back their products with clinical studies (the site was founded by board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Joel Schlessinger, M.D.). I was immediately drawn to two products: René Furterer Dry Shampoo ($24) and Tria Laser Hair Removal ($395).

I put the dry shampoo to the test then and there because I went for a run that morning and umm…was really in the need…wow I’m a total convert! As long as you spray it a good 12 inches from your hair it won’t leave any white residue (I’m blonde, but a woman next to me with black hair tried it and it worked for her too), and they’ve got a travel size so you can pack it in your gym bag. Super easy and quick to use. It’s formulated with rice and corn starch powders to clean hair, clay and silica powders to absorb excess oil, and essential oils of caraway, basil, and peppermint to help cleanse and balance the scalp.

As for the Tria….I’ve been wanting to get laser for years – literally – I just chicken out because for every one person that tells me it doesn’t hurt, another person tells me it “kills” (though it’s not like waxing is exactly painless…). Then there’s the whole having to let my hair grow out enough for them to perform it and the repeated sessions that stop me. With all that said I’m very curious to try the Tria, the first FDA-cleared laser device approved for at-home laser hair removal (note it only works on brown or black body hair on white to light brown skin tones).

The woman swore to me there was no pain involved and that all you have to do is place the laser tip on the area you’re looking to treat until you hear a beep. After each beep, you glide it about 1/4 inch. You only have to do this every two weeks, but it can take awhile because the laser head is really, really small. Plus it’s hard to tell where you’ve applied it so you can’t exactly do it while watching TV since it requires focus. They say that after the second treatment you can expect up to a 70% reduction in hair re-growth. After 2-3 months, hair re-growth will look lighter and finer. After 6+ months, you'll have smooth, hair-free skin.

Has anyone tried the Tria? Please share experiences in the comment section!

Here it is 12:37 a.m., and Makeup and Beauty Blog is playing dress-up.

I hope you like the new layout. I’ll be ironing out the kinks over the next few days (hopefully most of them tomorrow), but take a look around, and let me know what you think.

A few of the new changes…

  • A much-improved search engine (thanks to Google!)
  • A brand drop-down menu (I’ll be adding the links to the brand posts in it soon)
  • A whole slew of galleries with ga-jillions of pictures
  • And more stuff I’m sure I’m forgetting now because it’s way past my bedtime

Are You Impressed by These Hair Care Ads?
Sep 12th 2012, 06:01

Here’s an interesting Pantene advertisement that I saw on the shelf at my local Target and  I’m curious to see how the Beauty Brains community reacts.

The first ad claims the product “virtually erases damage of 100 blow-drys.”

While the second purports to provide “zero heavy buildup. 100% body.”

I have two questions for you, the Beauty Brains community: First, did you find this kind of numerical claim meaningful or even interesting? Second how do you think the company would support such claims? Are such claims even possible?

Here’s a hint the little “*” in the first claim tells us that they’re testing the “shampoo conditioner system, damage to smoothness and shine. ”

What are your thoughts on these kinds of claims? What do they mean to you (if anything)? And how do you think the company supports them? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

mac office hours collection Eyes: Pro Longwear Eyeshadows in Linger Softly and Bloom On; Cheeks: Pro Longwear Blushes in Eternal Sun and Baby Don’t Go; Lips: Pro Longwear Lipglass in Boundlessly Beige

Cubicle crusaders, overworked assistants and every other late-night office dweller logging in extra office hours every week, say it with me now!

We’re not gonna take it!

NO, we ain’t gonna take it!

We’re not gonna take it…ANYMORE!

We’re saying “No!” to wimpy wear time and makeup that malfunctions while we’re working overtime (which reminds me, anyone who says that working for a plus-size kitty supermodel is an easy gig obviously hasn’t done it before).

“No!” to the naysayers who say that it’s wrong to wear anything but bone or brown in the workplace.

“NO!” We demand delicious pops of pink, coral, plum and red to go with our office neutrals.

It’s time for our blushes, eyeshadows and glosses to work as hard as we do! Time for long-lasting makeup capable of keeping up with our busy schedules! Time for makeup able to log in just as much overtime as we do while still looking stylish!

Yes, the time has come for all of those tired, played-out pieces with weak wear time to step aside, and make room for the new 25-piece MAC Office Hours collection.

mac office hours collection

Starting with that first sip of coffee in the morning, all the way until your after-hours snack (don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone about your secret chocolate stash), the MAC Office Hours Collection never goes home early. When it comes to wear time, this limited edition collection of MAC Pro Longwear products for lips, cheeks and eyes just plain shreds!

The MAC Pro Longwear products are still relatively new, but I feel like I’ve loved them forever. I mean, finding MAC Pro Longwear Concealer was almost a life-changing experience. Remember Styledriven from last fall? — with the Pro Longwear products for lips and eyes? Office Hours feels like an extension of that collection to me.

It’s office makeup, MAC-style. Okay, sure, the overall look has “super-wearable” stamped all over it, but MAC included just enough color to hint at the rebel that resides behind most button-down shirts, pinstriped suits and sensible shoes.

The color palette includes shades of nude, pink, peach, beige, red and rose for lips; ivory, rose, brown, camel, red, mauve, gray and blue for eyes; and coral, beige, pink, rose, brown and plum for cheeks.

Here’s a quick look at six of the pieces…

Share a Tip Tuesdays: Unconventional Makeup Storage Ideas
Sep 11th 2012, 16:57

Organized chaos. :) That’s how I describe my current approach to organizing my makeup, and I’m always looking for new ways to store products and make them easier to find.

To that end, I’ve made some of my best makeup storage discoveries in some pretty unlikely places, like fabric stores and discount retailers with home sections like Marshall’s and T.J.Maxx.

Fabric, arts and crafts stores are veritable cornucopias of great storage ideas (with excellent prices compared to The Container Store!), and JoAnn is one of my faves.

That’s where I found that clear ArtBin box up at there at the top with 18 compartments for $7!

Shoot, that same thing would probably cost three times as much at The Container Store.

I’m guessing it was designed for beads and buttons, but I use it to store my MAC Paint Pots and Benefit Creaseless Creams.

Something tells me it doesn’t mind…

It’s also great for storing the MAC single eyeshadows I keep meaning to depot, and the compartments are just big enough to fit most products that come in tiny tubes.

And ArtBin makes a similar container for pencils called the Prism 6-Compartment Box (about $7 in stores, or $9 online). I use mine for eyeliners and to organize lip pencils by color, but it’d make a pretty good storage bin for glosses, too.

Oh, and you know those clear shoeboxes that you can get at The Container Store? Nice thing about them? They’re the perfect size for nail polishes. (...) Read the rest of Share a Tip Tuesdays: Unconventional Makeup Storage Ideas (386 words)

Zen Care SS Treatment: Zen and the Art of Hair Maintenance
Sep 11th 2012, 16:00

When I go through the process of getting my hair colored, it always comes with a nourishing treatment, so my hair is super-shiny when I leave the salon. But then, much like my gorgeous blowout, the shine tends to fade. Until now. My colorist – so sweet of her to share – told me what she applies to make it look so lustrous, so I can buy it and use it at home. Mystery revealed: it's Zen Care SS Treatment, designed to repair damage and control those fuzzy ends.

My colorist puts in on after the hair dye, but for home use, just apply after shampoo, massage it into your locks for five minutes, and then rinse it out with water. Made with "oriental zymotechnics and European herb therapy," it provides intense shine and healthy flowing hair, just like you had a professional treatment. It's particularly great for those in the habit of torturing their hair with chemicals (ahem, speaking), but everyone can use it to improve on a good thing. At Beauty of New York for $39.99.

Sep 11th 2012, 15:53

Admittedly, this is from a few weeks ago -- I meant to post it then, but somehow that didn't happen! In any case, this is one of my standard running about town weekend looks -- oversized tee, denim cutoffs, TOMS (because they're the most comfortable shoes EVER) and a Rebecca Minkoff bag! When I'm running errands (read: grocery shopping, going to Bed Bath and Beyond or Home Depot, doing laundry, other boring chores), this is a pretty standard look for me! (And, as a side note, I'm really loving that my iPhone case matches my bag.) Here's what I wore.

Forever 21 zebra print top (no longer available)
Gap denim cutoffs (no longer available)
Rebecca Minkoff Mini M.A.C. ($195, no longer available in this color, but I'm loving the ones here)
TOMS Ash Canvas Classics ($44 at toms.com)

What do you wear on the weekends when you're out and about? Let me know in the comments!

Seeing Spots: Brown, Liver, Age and Sun Spots
Sep 11th 2012, 16:06

Veronica Lake

Recently, while I was in Providence, RI my father-in-law pointed to the flurry of brown spots on the back of his hand and asked, “Are these liver spots?”

They’re not liver spots or age spots. Brown spots on the back of your hands are sun spots caused from excess sun exposure and aging. They have nothing to do with you liver.

They appear most commonly on the back of your hands, your face, and your forearms and are usually benign. The best prevention against developing sun spots is sunscreen and clothing.

The best treatments for removing sun spots are cryotherapy (having a dermatologist freeze them off with liquid nitrogen) or laser treatments. Bleaching creams and Retin-A do little to remove sun spots, while at-home treatments such as lemon juice and baking soda scrubs do nothing. Once the spots are removed, you must wear sunscreen or they’ll come back.

Or you could do like Veronica Lake did and wear glamorous long cotton or silk gloves. Course I don’t think I’ll recommend that to my father-in-law.

Derek Lam: Estée Lauder creative makeup director Tom Pecheux led the makeup team to create this look along with manicurist Jin Soon Choi (I went to her salon in NYC for the first time a few weeks ago – a must! Her color selection is insane). Estée Lauder’s new Pure Color Nail Lacquer in So Vain (launching March 2013), was used on nails. I’m loving the full brows here and the natural lips. Funny enough Pure Color Stay-on Shadow Paint in Halo and Pink Zinc, both launching January 2013, are what gave the lips their natural-looking gleam.

Rag & Bone: This is one of those looks that is amazing on the runway, but would look absolutely insane in real life. Redken creative consultant Guido is the man responsible for the sleek, slicked back look. He wanted the forehead exposed because it “makes for a dramatic look and adds structure as a way to update a textured, wavy look.”

Thakoon: Look at those eyes! Created by Diane Kendal the 1930s brow was inspired by Mia Farrow in The Great GatsbyJodhpur Eyebrow Pencil and Mambo Eyeliner Pencil were used on the brows. Bali Single Eyeshadow, Blondie Single Eyeshadow, and Santa Monica Blvd Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner were used on the eyes.

Altuzarra: What a gorgeous sculptural hair look. It was inspired by Helmut Newton nineties-era minimalism mixed with the precision of Japanese-inspired lines. I love that it’s a relatively uncomplicated look to achieve, but yet it’s wholly original.
